What is Pollinate Energy?
Pollinate Energy is a not-for-profit social business focused on improving the lives of poor people living in India’s urban slums. We do this by py providing access to low cost, clean energy technology.
Pollinate Energy is currently based out of Bangalore, where we have started 18 franchisees of our business – called “Pollinators”. These Pollinators sell solar lights to the urban slum communities, and receive training and start-up support from our international student program. We have sold around 9,000 products to date. We have sold only solar lights, but have tested and trialled a number of different products including cookstoves, water filters and menstrual cups, with mixed success rates.
We have recently expanded our operations to Hyderabad where are setting up a network of Pollinators to service the urban slum communities in the city. We will be expanding to two more cities in 2015.

Scope of position:
The role is to lead the roll-out of new products for Pollinate Energy utilising the existing Pollinator network in Bangalore and experiment with new markets in Hyderabad and Kolkata. We are specifically looking for people with experience and interest in sale of eco-friendly and affordable cookstoves and water filters to the BoP market. The position is ideal for an entrepreneurial and responsible person.
Timings are flexible but will generally be from Sunday to Thursday, 11am - 7pm, with Sunday being our most important day. You will be required to do a significant amount of fieldwork, going out into our communities with our Pollinators 3-4 full days per week.
Responsibilities and Tasks:
Community consultation to explore customer preferences and willingness to pay
Testing and trialling of different products in the communities to ensure they are of the highest quality
Pollinator consultation to understand product sales and overcome challenges
Training and supporting the Pollinators to sell new products
Supplier interaction to improve products, reduce costs and/or report feedback
Leadership of program teams to support your work in product roll-out
Oversight of the product R+D budget
Products of focus will be water filters and improved cookstoves and may expand to other areas such as mosquito nets and refrigeration products.
Proven sales experience with water filters, cookstoves to the BoP ( preferred)
General familiarity with water filter,cookstove technologies and ability to knowledgeably discuss product specifications
Management of a franchisee or dealer network (preferred)
Fluent in either Telugu or Kannada and English (other Indian languages is a plus)
Demonstrated entrepreneurial nature and capacity to adjust to new environments
High level interpersonal, negotiation and cross-cultural communication skills
High level of personal drive and initiative, creativity in finding solutions
Ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders to achieve a common objective
Experience managing projects and budgets
The position comes with a negotiable salary of Rs 35,000 base + Rs 5,000 incentive per month. Health insurance, following a 3 month trial period, is also provided.
It is contract role for 1 year to suit those who are looking to experiment in the development sector and the contract can be extended on mutual agreement.
Experience of working with an international team and helping expansion efforts in 2 new cities.
