In the first discussion, Ali (c-o Mutzbauer) has a good point about quality.Convincing manufacturers that something should have a lifetime of 5 years is difficult. For LED lamps, that's no problem,…Continue

We're making progress with the BennuValue (and BOPASA) system to be able to get feedback from villagers, and also help them avoid being cheated.

How about un-breakable lanterns with USB charging in and charging out ports?

From what I have noticed so far solar products without after sales support is a fraud.Solar currently in Africa is like introducing a new religion you don't focus too much on numbers but on how many fanatics your products are grooming for your brand.Almost all of the manufacturers show off numbers sold but nobody talks of lanterns getting damaged 3month after sales like broken panels, damaged battery.I sorry for some distributors this inexperienced companies will jeopardize you reputation with there desperate desire for money, fame without hard work all in the name of social enterprise.

A few points that every off grid solar manufacturer should keep in mind by Hans Mutzbauer "Cellphone charging capability is a must
The lamp must be capable to be maintaines and repaired locally
The light quality has to be on an acceptable level
Quality must be at least on the level of an industrial produced lamp
Expected livetime (with maintenance) has to be minimum 5, better 10 years"

Hi Lawal, thank you very much for creating this group.  GOGLA, being an off-grid lighting industry association, will be very much interested in hearing distributors and retailers feedback on products and communicating it to its members.

Very good to know. I'll highlight this whenever I'm asked.

While consumers may not be directly aware of this, low-quality AC adaptors (sometimes used to grid-charge lanterns in lieu of solar) can "leak" a lot of power.  Manufacturers should be aware of this and provide high-quality AC adaptors.
