Two competing models are emerging for provision of off-grid electricity systems in the Developing World. Early adopters had to purchase outright, but increasingly provision of off-grid electricity as a service (Pay-As-You-Go) is gaining in popularity. The main advantage is that the user does not have to save up the entire capital cost before getting any electricity. There are also practical advantages, and a few downsides.…Continue

Rolling black outs and high electricity prices were a common ritual in Nicaragua a decade ago. Schools and shops often languished for hours without power. Hotels and restaurants relied on kerosene, candles and expensive generators to keep businesses open. From a financial and health perspective, this was not sustainable.
Recent renewable energy investments have led to positive change in Nicaragua. Almost 190 MW…Continue

Every night, more than a billion people live in the dark when the sun goes down. They experience a different world than that of people in developed countries. Their only source of light, where available, comes from kerosene – a fuel that is expensive, dirty and potentially dangerous. Consequently, their immediate environment is often filled with smoke and fire, thereby making it difficult to even see properly.
Ten years ago, alternatives to kerosene were hard to find. Today is a very…Continue

Last month Lighting Global published another article in our Technical Notes series focused on procurement efforts for pico-solar products. The Note has a strong focus on avoiding proscriptive solutions for bulk purchases, choosing instead to provide advice on system components so that organizations can make decisions that best suit the particular needs of their individual programs. The Note is intended for any bulk procurement effort but we tried to keep a firm eye on humanitarian relief…Continue

Initiated by IFC, more than 20 companies, NGOs and other stakeholders signed a respective LOI based on an IFC concept paper. What was the main idea behind this visionary approach? The IFC proposition was indeed visionary:

Статья посвящена знакомству с жизнью, научной и общественной деятельностью «забытого научного новатора» С. А. Подолинского, которого Вернадский считал одним из своих предшественников в разработке учения о живом веществе, биосфере и ее эволюции в ноосферу. Вернадский ставил его научные достижения в один ряд с творчеством Майера, Томсона, Гельмгольца. Подолинский заложил основы новой теории труда как экономической, естественно-исторической и нравственной категории и показал, что…Continue
