A fresh look at achieving universal access to electricity

Hot off the press!  Or, if this weren't the internet that might be true. Along with my colleagues Dimitry Gershenson and Dan Kammen, I'm happy to announce publication of a new paper in the academic press (at Nature Climate Change) that I hope is valuable for the LuminaNet community.  Our paper, Decentralized energy systems for clean electricity access, reviews the state of knowledge on a continuum of on- to off-grid electricity technology systems, using a combination of historical and applied…See More

Updates to Lighting Global QA Standards

Many LuminaNET members are also involved (in one way or another) with the ongoing work of Lighting Global (and Lighting Africa / Lighting Asia), the IFC-World Bank programs supporting markets for off-grid lighting.  I'm one of the people who helps coordinate the Quality Assurance (QA) aspects of those programs and we just released an important update to the QA framework.  The updates are informed (as always) by a stakeholder process that many of you probably participated in.  Thank you!…See More

Attention LuminaNET....your collective wisdom is needed...

This morning Lighting Global, Lighting Africa, and Lighting Asia announced the beginning of a process to update the Minimum Quality Standards and Recommended Performance Targets for each program in a harmonized way.  I am sure LuminaNET is full of people whose experience in the field and the marketplace would provide good perspectives for the process.  Please take a minute to visit the webpage for the updating…

Big Markets in Small Towns: Results from a close study of the market for off-grid lighting in three towns in Kenya

Lighting Africa recently released a study of the market for off-grid lighting that was completed by me and several collaborators between 2009 and 2012.  We originally visited Kericho, Brooke, and Talek in 2009 and surveyed the market for off-grid lighting.  It wasn't a pretty sight...mostly low quality products were available.  These beat the traditional…

Hi Peter,

I hope you are well. I hear you are preparing to leave for Dakar. Evan suggested I contact you in regards to a query I have about the lifecycle carbon footprint of D cell alkaline batteries. If you have any information on this that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Christoph
